Kathy, who is part of the Advisor’s Circle, recently shared her experience with her newly made B6901 vest. She explained how she tailored the fit to better suit her body proportions. As someone who has been eyeing a vest for quite some time, Kathy was overjoyed when the B6901 Lisette for Butterick pattern was released. Unfortunately, finding vests that fit well can be challenging for shorter, wider individuals like herself.
In her fabric stash, she discovered a beautiful lightweight Tencel twill. There was enough fabric to create both the vest and a pair of Soho shirts, ensuring she would have a perfectly coordinated outfit for next summer. For the lining, she opted for a stunning quilt cotton she had purchased years ago without a specific project in mind. Its vibrant colors paired beautifully with the twill, and she felt it was finally time to put it to good use.
Her initial muslin began with tracing an 18 at the top and transitioning to a 20 at the bottom. Since this is a Big Four pattern, there's no vanity sizing involved. After measuring the back length, she decided to remove three inches in total. Without lengthen/shorten lines, she removed 1.5 inches above the armhole and another 1.5 inches below it. After creating the muslin, she realized she needed to add back some of the length she had taken out from below the armhole. Now that she has worn it, she believes she should adjust the 1.5 inches above the armhole down to just 0.5 inches. During the fitting, she noticed wrinkles forming on the lower half of the back, which she attributed to needing more width across the back. Unstitching the back darts seemed to resolve this issue effectively.
Initially, she planned to include real welt pockets since faux pockets always bothered her. However, upon measuring, she realized that a welt pocket could only be about two inches deep, and lacking a pocket watch, she decided against the added effort. Instead, she included a patch pocket inside, sewn onto the lining, which she finds practical for holding her phone in emergencies. (She admits to being slightly obsessed with having a dedicated phone pocket.)
During the sewing process, she missed the detailed instructions that typically accompany Liesl + Co patterns but managed to complete the project without major mishaps. Apart from wanting an extra inch of length, she is generally satisfied with the outcome. Her next project involves a floral corduroy vest with a cotton-silk lining. She plans to wear it this winter, sitting in front of a cozy fire, feeling like a hobbit.
While working on her vest, she reflected on the importance of patience and adaptability in sewing. Each adjustment taught her something new, reinforcing her belief that perfection often comes through trial and error. She hopes to share more of her sewing adventures soon, perhaps even tackling more complex projects in the future.
