kathy’s lisette for butterick B6901 vest

Kathy, a proud member of the Advisor's Circle, recently shared her experience with a new B6901 vest pattern from Lisette by Butterick. As someone who often struggles to find vests that fit well, Kathy was particularly excited about this pattern. However, like many petite and curvy individuals, finding the perfect fit can be challenging. For this project, Kathy chose a beautiful lightweight Tencel twill fabric from her stash. Not only did it provide just enough material for the vest, but she also had enough leftover to create a coordinating pair of Soho shirts, ensuring a perfectly matched ensemble for next summer. To complement the twill, she selected a stunning quilted cotton fabric she'd purchased years ago, purely because she loved its vibrant colors. It turned out to be a perfect match, adding both charm and functionality to the finished piece. Her initial muslin fitting began with a size 18 at the top grading into a size 20 at the bottom—a common approach for Big Four patterns where vanity sizing isn't an issue. Kathy measured the back length and decided to remove three inches overall. Since there were no lengthen/shorten lines on the pattern, she adjusted by taking out 1.5 inches above the armhole and another 1.5 inches below it. After completing the muslin, she realized she needed to restore some of the length she had taken out below the armhole. After wearing the final garment, she concluded that reducing the adjustment above the armhole to half an inch might be ideal. During her fitting, she noticed wrinkles forming on the lower half of the back, which she attributed to needing additional width across the back. Unstitching the back darts resolved this issue effectively. Initially, Kathy planned to add real welt pockets since faux ones tend to bother her. Upon measuring, she discovered that a welt pocket would only accommodate a depth of about two inches. Without a pocket watch to display, she reconsidered and opted instead for a simple patch pocket attached to the lining. This decision worked out well for her, providing a convenient spot for her phone—a necessity in today’s world. The process wasn’t entirely without hiccups. While working through the instructions, Kathy missed the detailed guidance typically provided by Liesl + Co patterns. Despite this oversight, she managed to complete the vest without major mishaps. Her only regret was not leaving an extra inch of length during construction. She remains satisfied with her creation and looks forward to making her next vest using floral corduroy paired with a cotton-silk lining. She envisions herself wearing it by a cozy fire this winter, embracing her inner hobbit aesthetic. As always, Kathy's journey highlights the importance of personalizing patterns to suit individual body types. Her attention to detail and willingness to experiment showcase the joy and satisfaction derived from crafting garments tailored specifically for oneself.
