Have you ever tried sewing the free Popover Sundress pattern from Oliver + S? The ladies from the Colonial Cablers chapter of the Smocking Arts Guild of America in Newport News, Virginia, sure did—72 times over! Jamie K. shares their inspiring story below.
Members of the Colonial Cablers Chapter of the Smocking Arts Guild of America (SAGA) recently crafted 72 sundresses to be placed inside Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes for 2019. Using the Oliver + S free Popover Sundress pattern, these talented seamstresses put their skills to good use while giving back to those in need.

To ensure everyone could participate easily, I prepared the patterns for each member to take home. Before starting, I also held a demonstration to walk everyone through the construction process. For those who prefer visual guidance, there’s also a detailed sew-along available on this blog.
Once the dresses were complete, we paired them with coordinating t-shirts, wrapped them with ribbons, and labeled each bundle with the dress size. Most of the dresses were size 4 or 6, but we also made a few size 8s and even one size 2. To make the project more fun, we encouraged members to use up their fabric stashes while working on the dresses. Some dresses received extra attention with lace, rickrack, or piping details. One creative member even made rickrack flowers to decorate the dresses!
Leigh G., who leads the Operation Christmas Child initiative at her church, received the bundles. Her church, which is quite small, managed to pack 1,089 boxes destined for 100 countries worldwide. It was truly rewarding to know our efforts contributed to some of those boxes! Looking ahead, we’re excited to work on the Sunny Day Shorts pattern next year to create outfits for the boys.
