Recently, the Colonial Cablers, a chapter of the Smocking Arts Guild of America based in Newport News, Virginia, embarked on an incredible sewing project. These dedicated women crafted 72 free Popover Sundress patterns, which will be part of Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes for the 2019 season. Jamie K. shared this inspiring story with us.
Each member of the Colonial Cablers utilized the Oliver + S free Popover Sundress pattern to create these charming dresses. I personally prepared the patterns for every member so they could take them home and start sewing. Before diving into the project, I also conducted a demonstration to walk everyone through the construction process. For those interested, there’s a detailed sew-along available on this blog as well.
Once the dresses were complete, we paired each one with a t-shirt and wrapped them up neatly with ribbons. Each bundle was clearly labeled with the dress size. While most of the dresses were size 4 and size 6, we also managed to finish a few size 8 dresses and even one size 2 dress. Encouraging creativity, we invited members to utilize their fabric stashes while working on the project. Some dresses received special touches like lace, rickrack, and piping. One talented member went above and beyond by creating rickrack flowers to decorate the dresses.
After finishing the dresses, we handed over the bundles to Leigh G., who leads the Operation Christmas Child initiative at her church. Her small congregation successfully packed 1,089 boxes destined for 100 different countries worldwide. We’re incredibly proud to have contributed these handmade dresses to their efforts! Looking ahead, next year we’re planning to make shorts for the boys using the Sunny Day Shorts pattern.

This project not only brought joy to children around the globe but also strengthened our community bonds within the Colonial Cablers. It’s truly rewarding to see how much impact a group of passionate seamstresses can have on the world.
