Our Swingset Skirt sew-along is officially underway, and we’re thrilled to introduce Meredith, a truly talented seamstress who has graced our blog before with her exquisite sewing projects here and here. If you haven’t grabbed your copy of the pattern yet, now’s the time—whether you prefer a physical version or a digital download. Meredith’s knack for picking fabrics is unparalleled, so let’s see what she’s created for her very special Swingset Skirt!

Hello there! I’m Meredith, and you can usually find me blogging over at Olivia Jane Handcrafted, where I share everything from fashion to home decor. Lately, I’ve been more active on Instagram, too, posting little sneak peeks of my latest creations. It’s a passion project that keeps me inspired, whether I’m working on garments, quilts, bags, or home accessories. With two young kids at home and another one on the way, my days are busy but filled with joy. Sewing is my escape—it’s where I channel my creativity while keeping up with life’s whirlwind.
My Plan for the Swingset Skirt
Fabric Choices: For this skirt, I’ve selected three distinct fabrics to create something truly unique. The outermost layer features a floral chambray fabric, paired with a whimsical tana lawn horse print from Liberty. Sandwiched between these two fabrics is a vibrant hot pink georgette, adding a touch of drama and allowing the skirt to be fully reversible. This combination makes the skirt both ultra-girly and functional.
Size: Since my daughter is five years old, I decided to go with a size five to ensure it fits her perfectly.
Custom Modifications: To make the skirt even more special, I’m aiming to give it a fuller silhouette by slightly altering the templates. The georgette layer will follow the main template, while the outer layers will be shortened using the lining template instead. I’ll also be using gold bias tape to finish the hem of the georgette layer, giving it a polished edge. All seams will be done with French seaming to ensure durability and a clean finish.
Sewing Notes: Having already made a few Swingset skirts for myself during my pregnancy, I discovered that I didn’t necessarily need the drawstring to be visible on every layer. However, I still appreciate its adjustability. For this skirt, I’ll include a drawstring on only one layer, probably the chambray side, so it can remain hidden when worn in reverse. I’m still undecided about whether I’ll use ribbon or pony fabric for the drawstring, but I’ll decide closer to completion.
Styling Ideas: My daughter is currently obsessed with skirts, so this project couldn’t have come at a better time. She loves pairing her Liberty skirts with casual tees—her favorites being Minion-themed or Gator prints—and she adores wearing glittery shoes. Her sense of style is entirely her own, and I’m excited to see how she decides to style this new creation!
Stay tuned as we continue following Meredith’s journey with the Swingset Skirt. There’s so much more to explore, and we’re sure her final piece will be nothing short of spectacular!
