South Africa: The growth momentum of the apparel industry is stable in 2012

The business club reported on January 20th that according to South Africa's garment manufacturers, the South African garment industry is expected to continue its steady development this year in view of the steady development of South Africa's apparel industry over the past 18 months.

It is reported that as few garment manufacturers in South Africa export goods to the United States and European markets, South African garment exports will not be affected by the financial crisis in these countries and regions. In the past, the clothing industry in South Africa has been affected by cheap imports from China. However, thanks to the government’s efforts to promote employment and growth, South Africa’s clothing industry performed well last year.

Earlier, the South African government announced a new policy that requires all government departments to buy clothing and other products from the local market. In October 2011, the South African Garment and Textile Workers Union and the employers of the apparel industry reached an agreement to promote employment by reducing the salary of newly recruited employees by 30%. The Alliance implements the recommendation that the government should reduce the tariffs on imported textile fabrics in order to promote the development of the domestic garment industry; in addition, the government should also step up the investigation of illegal clothing imports. In the past 10 years, illegal clothing imports have caused 50,000 South Africans to lose their jobs.

Of all the fabrics used by local businesses in South Africa, 80% are imported. At present, the government imposes 22% of import tariffs on these fabrics, which increases the production costs of local enterprises and weakens the competitiveness of the products.
