The autumn and winter 2011/2012 European Fabric Exhibition has now passed two months, and Japan's domestic fabric exhibitions are approaching their conclusion. Regarding the characteristics of this season’s fabrics, Nagasaki Kang Ching, a purchasing manager at WORLD Fabric, shared his insights. He believes that today’s market demands clothing that is comfortable to wear, easy to match, and not overly trendy or personalized. However, many brands have ended up producing similar styles, as there hasn’t been much change in design or aesthetic.
Therefore, the focus for fall/winter 2011/2012 has shifted toward color. Since color and fabric material are closely linked, it can be said that we’re entering an era where fabric materials are defined by their color palette. This season, animal hair-inspired colors like caramel, camel, and pink are expected to remain dominant. From caramel to camel, the blend of fibers such as mohair and angora will create a soft, elegant look.
However, some caramel shades at the exhibition were too dark, potentially misleading buyers into choosing the wrong fabric that doesn’t achieve the desired visual effect. Instead, lighter, more vibrant tones like sky blue and soft cyan are gaining popularity. The trend is moving away from pastel sweetness toward a more modern, balanced blue tone. Other popular shades include smoke gray, beige-gray, and warm caramel tones.
Fabrics that excel in these color schemes are primarily wool-based, such as corduroy. Lightweight, breathable fabrics remain a timeless choice, but thick, heavy materials may feel too cumbersome for everyday wear. Innovations in cotton processing and improved Melton products are set to bring a range of new options for the coming year, focusing on quality, ease of use, and versatility. These developments are sure to offer fresh inspiration for designers and manufacturers alike.
