The 2011/12 autumn and winter European fabric exhibition has already passed two months, while Japan's domestic fabric exhibitions are drawing to a close. Regarding the characteristics of this season’s fabrics, Nagasaki Kang Ching, the purchasing manager at WORLD Fabric, shared his insights. He believes that today’s market demands clothing that is comfortable to wear, easy to style, and not overly trendy or personalized. However, many brands are still offering similar designs, as there hasn’t been much innovation in styles or aesthetics.
Therefore, the focus for fall and winter 2011/12 lies heavily on color. Since color is closely tied to fabric materials, it can be said that we are entering an era where fabric materials are defined by their color palettes. This season, animal hair tones such as caramel, camel, and pink will continue to dominate trends. From caramel to camel, the combination of materials like mohair and angora will bring a soft, elegant, and lively look.
However, some of the caramel shades shown at the exhibition were too dark, potentially misleading buyers into choosing the wrong material, which might not deliver the desired visual effect. Instead, lighter, more vibrant shades of cyan are gaining popularity. The trend is shifting from the sweet, delicate pastel styles to more modern, medium reds and cool-toned grays. Smoke powder, gray, and beige tones are also becoming prominent, blending well with the caramel palette.
Fabrics that stand out in these colors are mainly wool-based materials such as corduroy. Lightweight, breathable fabrics remain popular, but thick and heavy textures are being reconsidered due to their perceived heaviness. Innovations in cotton processing and improved Melton products are set to introduce a wide range of new options for the upcoming year, focusing on quality, ease of use, and versatility. These developments are expected to shape the next wave of fashion trends in the coming seasons.
