By 2020 Asia's non-woven production will account for more than 50% of the world

By 2020, more than half of the world's nonwovens will be produced in Asia. Research from the Textile Information Office of Business Information Corporation shows that non-woven fabric production almost tripled between 2001 and 2011, and last year, Asia accounted for more than 40% of global output. In 2011 alone, non-woven production in Asia grew 7.4% to 3.1 million, 10.0% in 2010 and 13.1% in 2009. Such a strong growth rate reflects the rising use of nonwovens in Asia as countries in Asia continue to move toward industrialization. In addition, developments and innovations in the field of nonwovens led to the beginning of new applications for nonwovens, said Textile Intelligence Research. Among the major nonwovens producers in Asia, China produces about two thirds, or about 2.1 million tons. The most important types of nonwovens produced in Asia are the spunbond and meltblown nonwovens with a 44.2% share in terms of production. However, the fastest growing category of nonwovens is spunlaced nonwovens, which grew at an average annual rate of 20% between 2008 and 2011, an increase of only 21.8% in 2011 alone. Many analysts predict an unlimited increase in the use of nonwovens in several end-use markets in Asia over the coming years, including in the medical and health sectors, filtration, agriculture and geotextiles. In addition, China and India will be potential markets for this use. However, if nonwovens producers in Asia are able to realize their full potential, they will invest in advanced technology and manufacturing equipment and utilize high quality rayon and functional fiber, the report said.
